7.27How do beings fall into folly and ignorance?

“By the delusion of the pairs of opposites (dvandva), sprung from desire and aversion, all beings fall into confusion at birth.” The engine of ignorance is here laid bare: from the two primal reactions, liking and disliking, arise all the polar pairs — pleasure and pain, gain and loss, honour and dishonour — and the mind, tossed endlessly between the poles, never rests long enough to see clearly. This is why Samatva — even-mindedness towards the pairs — is the BG's constant prescription: to still the see-saw is to lift the fog.
