from Q&A with KnAThere is a yogic technique, powerful but difficult, by which total awareness may be secured within one lifetime through sincere practice. It consists in remaining as conscious as possible in the final, dissolving moments of sleep at night — not lying awake in insomnia, but holding a different kind of alertness, with the senses withdrawn yet mindfulness unbroken, not surrendering to inert sleep. The converse practice is easier and less powerful: to “sleep” consciously during the day — not by napping or day-dreaming, but by consciously withdrawing activity from the energised mind and making it still, as it becomes unconsciously at night. This is likely what Kṛṣṇa hints at. It is by no means an instruction to become an owl.
