from Q&A with KnA“The giving up of obligatory action (niyata karma) is not proper; to abandon it from delusion is declared tāmasic.” The threefold analysis: tamasic renunciation abandons duty out of sheer delusion; rajasic renunciation drops an action merely because it is troublesome or painful, from fear of bodily hardship — and gains nothing by it (18.8); sattvic renunciation performs the obligatory action while renouncing attachment and fruit (18.9). This is the crux: the highest renunciation is not the dropping of the deed but the dropping of the grasping — one keeps the action and renounces only the “for me”. True tyāga is inward, not outward.
