Themes
from The Thematic Companion to the Bhagavad GītāMeaning — Questions & Solutions
from Q&A with KnA18.1The underlying principle of renunciation.
Arjuna’s final question: “I wish to know the truth of sannyāsa and of tyāga, distinctly (pṛthak).” Two words, both meaning “renunciation” — is there a difference? The seemingly technical query is the perfect door into the summary, for the entire Gītā turns on rightly understanding what is to be renounced (recall the false renunciation of 3.4, 5.2, 6.2). The whole book has been, in a sense, the answer to this one question; here it is made explicit.
