13.28“Do not injure yourself.”

“For, seeing the same Lord established everywhere, he does not injure the Self by the self (na hinasty ātmanātmānam), and thereby reaches the supreme goal.” A profound ethical corollary. When I see the one Self in all, harming another is harming myself — for there is, at bottom, no “other” self to harm. Cruelty is revealed as a kind of self-mutilation performed in ignorance. And “not injuring the Self by the self” also has the inward sense of 6.5 — not degrading oneself by wrong identification. Equality of vision is thus at once the root of ahiṃsā and the safeguard of one’s own liberation.
