8.14Why practise beforehand?

“For one who remembers Me constantly, with no other thought, I am easy to reach, Arjuna — for that ever-steadfast yogi.” Here is the answer to why the whole discipline must be built up in advance. No one can, at the terrified and disordered moment of death, suddenly summon a steadiness he never cultivated; the mind at the end runs in the grooves it has worn all its life. Only constant remembrance (nitya-yukta) makes the Divine “easy to attain” at the close. The exam cannot be passed by a candidate who never studied.
