17.1What of one who transgresses the rules yet worships with faith?

Arjuna’s question is sharp and follows directly from 16.23–24: “Those who, setting aside the scriptural ordinance, yet worship endowed with faith (śraddhayānvitāḥ) — what is their standing? Sattva, rajas or tamas?” It is a real and generous question: is the sincere but irregular worshipper simply damned along with the deliberate transgressor? K’s answer is more discerning than a flat rule — it depends on the quality of the faith, which is what the whole chapter now analyses.
