Translation

Swami Gambhīrānanda · follows Śaṅkara-bhāṣya

The Blessed Lord said, "I am the world-destroying Time, grown in stature and now engaged in annihilating the creatures. Even without you, all the warriors arrayed in the confronting armies will cease to exist!"

श्रीभगवान् ने कहा -- मैं लोकों का नाश करने वाला प्रवृद्ध काल हूँ। इस समय, मैं इन लोकों का संहार करने में प्रवृत्त हूँ। जो प्रतिपक्षियों की सेना में स्थित योद्धा हैं, वे सब तुम्हारे बिना भी नहीं रहेंगे।।

11.32“I am Time” — not Kṛṣṇa.

Kālo’smi loka-kṣaya-kṛt pravṛddhaḥ — I am Time, grown mighty, the destroyer of worlds; here I am engaged in withdrawing the worlds. Even without you, all these warriors arrayed in the opposing ranks shall cease to be.” This is the terrible centre of the whole Gītā. The speaker is no longer “the friend Kṛṣṇa” but Kāla — Time itself, the impersonal, all-consuming power under which every finite thing is already, in principle, undone. The clocks of these men have already run out; the vision merely shows Arjuna what is always true, and usually hidden. Death is not something Arjuna will do; it is something Time has already done, and Arjuna is only asked to let it appear through him.
