It is indeed a part of Mine that, becoming the eternal individual soul in the region of living beings, draws the organs, which have the mind as their sixth, and which abide in Nature.

इस जीव लोक में मेरा ही एक सनातन अंश जीव बना है। वह प्रकृति में स्थित हुआ (देहत्याग के समय) पाँचो इन्द्रियों तथा मन को अपनी ओर खींच लेता है अर्थात् उन्हें एकत्रित कर लेता है।।

15.7The eternal Jīva?

“An eternal fragment of My own Self (mamaivāṃśo… sanātanaḥ), becoming the living soul (jīva-bhūtaḥ) in the world of the living, draws to itself the senses, of which the mind is the sixth, resting in Prakṛti.” The individual soul is here defined as an aṃśa — a portion, a spark — of the Supreme, eternal in nature, that has (as it were) stepped into embodiment and gathered around itself the five senses and the mind. The word “fragment” must not be pressed materially (the infinite is not chopped into pieces); it means that the jīva is of the same essence as the Whole, as a spark is of the same nature as the fire, differing only in apparent limitation. This is the reconciliation of the “many souls” of experience with the “one Self” of metaphysics: the jīvas are countless as reflections, one as the light reflected.
